The LHSAA awarded four baseball and softball championships to Level 2A schools for the first time this spring. Coincidentally, the Louisiana Sports Writers Association’s Class 2A All-State teams were also divided in four ways.

Pitcher Sarah Chamberlain, of Division III champion Calvary Baptist, was voted MVP of the 2A softball team. Scott Wilcher was voted Coach of the Year after leading Mangham to the 2A title.

Another pitcher, Spencer Davis, won outstanding baseball player honors after leading Sterlington to the 2A baseball title. Justin Boyd, of Division III Opelousas Catholic semi-finalist, has been selected as Baseball Coach of the Year by a panel of sports journalists from across the state.

Chamberlain was 24-2 and struck out 199 catches in 154 innings with a 0.77 ERA for the Cavaliers. Davis was 12-0 with seven full games and three shutouts with a 1.29 ERA.

Wilcher is no stranger to LSWA honors, having previously been honored as baseball coach of the year while coaching at Mangham. Boyd led OCHS to the semi-finals of the LHSAA tournament for the second consecutive season.

Connor Pellerin of the Episcopal, who was on the baseball team as a utility player, was the only player in Metro Baton Rouge on the LSWA 2A teams. Pellerin led the Knights to the Division III quarterfinals with a 9-3 record that included 108 strikeouts in 72 innings. He also hit 0.360 with nine doubles, two homers and 24 RBIs.

Braydon Jones of Lakeside (8-3, 1.65 ERA), Ty O’Neal of Ouachita Christian (9-3, 1.12 ERA) and Matt Collins of Opelousas Catholic (6-1, 1.45 ERA) were other selected baseball pitchers. Lakeside’s Jake Gray (.472) has been selected as the team’s receiver.

Hannan’s Nick Lucido (0.407), Rosepine’s Tanner Wiegand (0.450), Sterlington’s Dalton Dopson (0.545) and Notre Dame’s Thomas Sterling (0.430) were the chosen infielders. Lloyd Nash of St. Charles Catholic (0.439), Joe Vercher of Menard and Bryce Wallace of Ouachita Christian (0.438) were selected as vaults.

Other public service picks were Beau Ross (6-3), Mason Vicknair of Riverside (0.405), Jarrett McDonald of Sterlington (0.500) and Connor Fawcett of Kinder (0.337).

Menard’s Jensen Howell (15-5, 1.96 ERA), Rosepine’s Morghan LaTour (19-6, 201 strikeouts) and Notre Dame’s Marcella Gossen (21-2) joined Chamberlain as pitchers for the softball team. Rosepine’s Lauryn McMahon (0.365) did so as a receiver.

The infield consisted of Haylee Brinlee of Rosepine (.442), Morgan Woodard of Menard (.472), Camryn Flanagan of St. Thomas Aquinas (.500) and Madison Watson of Riverside (.480). Kennedy Smith (.479) of Notre Dame, Toni Perrin (.553) of Riverside and Sydney Williams (.505) of Hannan secured the outfield spots.

Two Mangham players, Arron Dye (11-5) and Cam Neatherly (.468), were joined as utility caps by Codi Vernace of Haynes Academy (.600), Lexi Johnson of Riverside (.578) and Summer Atkins of Pickering (.445).
