Although the snow and ice are still thick on the ground, ideas for new home improvement, landscaping and construction projects have begun to bloom in the minds of Lake District residents.
Capitalizing on this annual phenomenon, the Lake Region Builders Association is gearing up to host its 34th Annual Home and Sports Show this Saturday and Sunday, March 19-20 at the Kent Freeman Arena in Detroit Lakes.
The two-day event draws hundreds of people eager to tap into the insights and expertise that populate the more than 60 vendors scattered across the venue, which effectively comprises two separate arenas.
One side is focused on home-related exhibits, including landscaping, plumbing and heating, electricians, custom home builders, and more, while the other side is dedicated to all things relates to sports and outdoor recreation.
In addition, there will be a silent auction to benefit local scholarships for young people pursuing a career in the building trades. These scholarships are awarded annually to students within the service area of the LRBA’s five counties: Becker, Otter Tail, Mahnomen, Wilkin, and Norman counties.
Door prizes are also part of the fun, as well as gardening seminars. This year’s seminars will focus on “Tips and Tricks — Preparing for Spring Indoors and Outdoors (Saturday, 11:30 am); “Planting in Driftwood” (Saturday, 1:30 p.m.); “Composting in the yard and garden for beginners (Sunday, 11:30 a.m.); and “How to Make a Spring Garden Gnome” (Sunday, 1:30 p.m.).
Both morning presentations will feature Sandy Gunderson of Becker County Environmental Services, while the afternoon presentations will be presented by Jay’s Garden Boutique.
Admission is $5 per person, with $1 of the proceeds from each ticket donated to the Becker County Food Pantry (based in Detroit Lakes) and the Bridge Community Pantry (formerly the Perham Food Shelf).
The Home and Sports Show hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, March 19 and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, March 20. For more information, please contact the Lake Region Builders Association at 218-847-0699 or builders@lakeregionbuilders. com. You can also visit the LRBA website at
